National Gypsum Without Rails?
Medicine Lodge, KS
In a recent news article in the Hutchison News, National Gypsum had a feature story on its history and future.  The little rail line that could, should or would - was strangely absent from the article.

The Medicine Lodge branch line in better days, sometimes featured a 'switcher' that stayed in Medicine Lodge and switched the Gypsum site as need be.  As sited in the Hutch News article, "15-20" rail cars a day use to be shipped from this mine."  Now in later years, due to rail support, National Gypsum now trucks 99% of all of materials from Sun City to Medicine Lodge.

As reported in other news articles, the toll on area bridges and roads is tremendous.  It is sad to note that this once profitable rail line now sets virtually dormant.  There are rumors that the line is now up for sale or abandonment -- which ever comes first.
